When ceramics are found in fragments (as is most often the case), rim sherds provide the most information about the pot as a whole.

Rim sherds can be used to estimate the diameter of a pot's opening, as well as its profile shape.

Body Sherds

Decorative motifs, whether impressed into the clay or applied to its surface, are often preserved on body sherds.  Illustration can help pull this decoration to the forefront of the image.
