Digital Illustration

Highly detailed and colourful illustrations can be created using Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. The benefit to digital illustration is that Layers can be used to isolate specific elements of a plan or drawing, a colour layer can be made visible or hidden with a simple tap, and colours can be reconstructed from faded images by using the Eyedropper feature.

Digitizing images for my dissertation

Digitizing texts on artifacts makes them easier to read. Working from a photograph ensures that the illustration is accurate.

Making Texts Clear

With all the background noise removed, this heart amulet text from the papyrus of Amunemwija becomes much easier to read.

Comparative Illustrations

Digital illustration allows for images to be easily resized, moved around, isolated, or added to other images. In this illustration two inscribed heart scarabs are compared for their size difference.

Site Plan Illustration

Using layers, we can isolate different buildings or constructions from different time periods so that various elements can be hidden or made visible depending on what you're looking to highlight in your research.

Colour or B&W

The colours from the Papyrus of Ani were reconstructed using the Eyedropper feature in Procreate. To start, I outlined the elements I wanted to isolate from the Weighing of the Heart scene. I then duplicated that layer to fill with colour. This allows to me to choose between a colour or B&W image depending on what best suits my research needs.
